Have you recently bought a new iPhone? Have you tried to set it up and been frustrated by the iOS setup assistant? If so, you’re not alone. Many people make the mistake of thinking they need to use this assistant when they first set up their iPhone, but that’s not actually the case. Fortunately, there are some clear instructions on how to set up your iPhone without using the iOS setup assistant. Read on to learn how to get your new iPhone up and running in no time!

What you should do before setting up

Before you start setting up your new iPhone, there are a few things you should do. First of all, it’s important that you download and install iTunes onto your computer before setting anything else up. This will be used as a tool in future steps. Once that’s done, make sure all of your information is backed up on iCloud. That way if something goes wrong during the setup process, all of that data won’t be lost! Also make sure to charge both the phone and its dock before moving on. You wouldn’t want either battery level running low while installing apps!

Connecting to Wifi

Wifi is essential for using certain services. Before you can use an app or access data from an app, you must first connect to a wifi network that is available nearby. The ios setup assistant will display all of these networks near you along with their passwords so that you can select which one you want and enter in a password if needed. If you already have a network set up, simply click on it, and it will be automatically connected so that your phone can start syncing everything. Once wifi is working on your phone, turn off Cellular Data before proceeding! To do so: Settings>Cellular>OFF/Green

Setting Up as a New Device

Connecting a new device for first time can be nerve-wracking. There are no instructions to follow, and you’re never sure if it will work correctly. When setting up as a new device, press and hold down on the power button until an Apple logo appears. If you don’t see one within 10 seconds, press and hold down on Restart instead. Then select Set Up as New iPhone, which should appear under Connect to iTunes in purple font. Connect your device in DFU mode: With your phone turned off, plug it into iTunes and hold down both Power and Home buttons simultaneously for 3 minutes before releasing Power button only.

Setting Up as Existing Device

Your phone will finish setting itself up within a few minutes. All you need to do is follow instructions onscreen and go through a short tutorial that introduces you to some of your phone’s basic features. You’ll also be asked if you want to download additional apps, such as iBooks, Apple Maps, and Siri; we recommend doing so before you get started with anything else (and while you’re connected to Wi-Fi). Once that’s done, it’s time for your first real test drive!

Finishing Setup

The first step of setting up an iPhone is to connect it to a Wi-Fi network. From Settings, tap Wi-Fi and choose a network if available. If there’s no Wi-Fi option, follow steps 7 through 12 under Wi-Fi Setup Using iTunes below. Next, enter a passcode and follow these steps: Once you’ve entered your passcode, select Continue and then Agree to accept Apple’s Software License Agreement. To continue setting up your phone, select Set Up as New Phone or Restore from iCloud Backup (or any backup). Tap on Set Up as New Phone for initial setup without restoring data from another device. If you want all of your info restored from another device, tap Restore from iCloud Backup instead.
